CONned: An Introduction

Hey Sequential Art Collect-ors,

We hope that, so far, you’ve enjoyed reading the blog as much as we’ve enjoyed getting it up here for you to peruse.  If you like what we’ve done up to this point, or you like anything that we serve up for you in the future, please don’t be shy – let us know by leaving us your comments at the individual posts or by e-mailing us at tellmemore@sacart.org.

Now on with the show…

With New York Comic Con now in the can and months of shows and festivals of various types and sizes on the horizon,  “Convention Season” now seems like it will stretch itself out across the entire year, providing endless entertainment for fans and professionals alike.

While we here at the Sequential Art Collective will undoubtedly check-in over the next few months with the odd report about the cons we attend, we have decided to devote this week  specifically to varying views and perspectives on the “shared” convention experience.

Justin Maudslien, aka Mr. M., will use his Alphabet of the Arcane to spell out the bare necessities of show attendance; Kevin Gillespie will relate to us his introduction to the con scene (at the 2009 NYCC); Lee French, a seasoned convention vet, will share a different view of that same February weekend; and finally, Leah Schnelbach will analyze an academic panel that proposed calling comics “illiterature”… and not for the reasons your 7th grade English teachers may have thought.

So, pull out your guidebooks, and schedule your sittings accordingly. You’re gonna need a break from walking around the mundane show floor we call life – and the best way to do that is by stopping by these online panel sessions hosted by the S.A.C.

I’ll see you in the front row…

Matthew C. Murray
Chairman and President
Sequential Art Collective

(BTW – Those of you who came here looking for your weekly dose of Monday Media Madness, can backtrack a couple of days and get your fix with a fairly fearsome Friday Fright Fest that explores the relationship between some iconic Tales of terror.)
