Alphabet of the Arcane: The Letter M

In Alphabet of the Arcane, Justin Maudslien, aka Sub-Human’s Mr. M., explores weird and little known factoids and shares his skewed observations about the world of comics, cartoons and sequential art.

Get ready for another dose of shock and awe from the infamous Mr. M. (Infamous is when you are more than famous.)  This one is longer than a hooker’s dream.

If there is only one statement that is true about the entire human race, it is mankind has always been fascinated by it’s cousin, the primate.  Be it the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz…

…or maybe it was the first time you saw the monkeys bone at the zoo, everyone has a soft spot for our furry mammal friends, even the former President who has more aircraft carriers and federal buildings named after him than an ape has bitches in his harem.

Bask in the glory of one of the strangest gimmicks of the comic medium…Monkeys, apes, and baboons, oh my!

Alphabet of the Arcane: The Letter P

In Alphabet of the Arcane, Justin Maudslien, aka Sub-Human’s Mr. M., explores weird and little known factoids and shares his skewed observations about the world of comics, cartoons and sequential art.

Greetings and salutations mortals, it is I, the bringer of blogs, the conjurer of connotations, the wordsmith of…um…words.

This episode is brought to you by the letter P and the number 1. You might be thinking: “Oh great, an entire blog about golden showers or other sick fetishes… but no!  Relax, faithful readers, for I have brewed up a subject for the ages. Take note of your location because some day your grandchildren will ask where were you the day you read– The Infamous Pimp Slap comic blog.

Alphabet of the Arcane: The Letter L

In Alphabet of the Arcane, Justin Maudslien, aka Sub-Human’s Mr. M., explores weird and little known factoids and shares his skewed observations about the world of comics, cartoons and sequential art.

Surrender all free will for your Supreme Overlord, Mr. M,  has arrived!   Gather round my halflings and let me tell you a tale of hard riffs and clashing swords.  This bi-weekly blog is brought to you by the number 8 and the letter L.  This time L stands for Lord of the Rings and Lead singers of metal bands.  These are a few of my favorite things!

Once I set foot back on the continent from my recent trip I felt overdosed on culture.  I had to reintroduce myself to the American past time of getting fatter by sitting on the couch, and what better way than a movie trilogy marathon?  It came to my attention that most of the characters in Lord of the Rings resemble heavy metal singers.  It might be: the testosterone soaked beards; the manly grimaces; all that hair whipping around; or even the sweaty muscles holding axes, but any way you slice it with a battle axe it is clear there is nothing more metal than a medieval fantasy world like Middle Earth.

I looked a little more closely and found that many metal bands take their name directly from the famed books of yesteryear.  For example the Viking Death Metal band Amon Amarth took their name from the elvish word for Mount Doom.  Another band went so far to call themselves Gandalf, the main wizard of the story.

Alphabet of the Arcane: The Letter E

In Alphabet of the Arcane, Justin Maudslien, aka Sub-Human’s Mr. M., explores weird and little known factoids and shares his skewed observations about the world of comics, cartoons and sequential art.

I bring greetings from the Old World, o’ faithful reader, where “E” stands not for ecstasy but for Europe. Gather round the campfire and let Mr. M tell you a tale of a fanboy walking the Earth, much like Kane from Kung Fu.  Allow me to relate my travels around… The European Eunion… er,  I mean Union!

Autobots…Roll Out!

Now, this particular fanboy starts getting the shakes two days before new comic book day, or what you mortals might call Wednesday.  Heaven help those who have to tolerate me during the holidays when new comic day is moved to Thursday.  My greatest challenge on this trip would not be the cultural barriers, but CWS (Comic Withdrawal Syndrome.)  After a little internet searching, my fears had been confirmed, comic shops were few and far between and comic conventions were mere whispers on the wind.  Still, my childhood heroes faced Dr. Doom, the Joker and even MODOK every month, surely I could muster the bravery to explore the origins of western culture in a far off land, even if comics were not readily available.

My friend Mike and I set off to explore the hostels of Europe with nothing but a large backpack and a thirst for culture.  Mike came up with the idea that our futuristic backpacks made us space marines with the ability to transform.  Once we dropped off our large backpacks (which were worn in “assault mode”) we could wear the smaller packs (known as “recon mode.”)

Alphabet of the Arcane: The Letter G

The Doctor is out on a call.  Luckily Mr. M. had his next letter of his arcane alphabet ready to roll…

On alternating Tuesdays, Justin Maudslien, aka Sub-Human’s Mr. M., explores weird and little known factoids and shares his skewed observations about the world of comics, cartoons and sequential art.

It’s that time of year again, spring is sprung, and in honor of that, this letter G could stand for many things: G-string, the G-spot, or God, a special Easter edition. No, this blog will be my rant, as I hammer out my complaints against “The Glut.”

Today the G stands for the infamous comic book gluts put out in order to sell a few extra copies. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for capitalism and making an extra buck if you can, but there comes a point when the market cannot hold any more issues for a certain character or crossover event. It is true that there is too much of a good thing, and comics are no exception.
