Hopefully, we all have people in our lives to whom we can say anything. Our parents have forgiven the most only in that we were of an age to speak impulsively the most at that time. In any case, whether its your best drinking buddy, your priest, girlfriend, mentor, or psychiatrist; you need to be able to express yourself without being judged sometimes. The time to NOT speak freely, however, would be when critiquing the work of a friend or colleague. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be honest…far from it. What I’m getting to is that you shouldn’t speak FREELY. You must speak carefully and with even temper.
The internet can be a cold place. I sometimes imagine filmmakers and television actors crying in front of their monitors, wiping their eyes with piles of cash. People are very quick to attack the work that folks—both decent and not—put forth. People are even quicker to be dismissive of all the hard work that goes into a creative endeavor. In their minds, I imagine they must feel that by keeping to such particular standards they are doing their part to stem the tide of poor quality work.
What quite a few people should remember, though (and this is what makes me truly sad) is that most times people enter into a creative endeavor with the best of intentions. What I mean to say is that most times people are trying to create something for which there is a purpose. I was talking to Rick Parker a few months ago and he said something to me which I thought to be a great thing to remember: “All ideas are good.”
When bad art happens, by and large, it is because of mistakes made on levels that most folks don’t really get a chance to visualize before attacking. When your compatriots ask you to look over their work and give feedback, this is your chance to stem that tide. This is the moment where opinions really do matter… before the work is completed. It is an honor to give feedback to talented people and truthfully, people ask me to do just that pretty frequently.
These are the three rules I try to hold myself to when examining the work of others. If you are in a writers group, class, or workshop these can be very helpful.
1.BE CRITICAL: What this means is that you need to remember that you have been asked to give feedback on the work at hand. Don’t muddy up the waters by bringing what you know about the writer into the mix. They are asking for your opinion, give it to them. They wouldn’t have asked if all they wanted was a high five and a “good job!” Treat the work as you would any text in need of careful reading. At the same time don’t over-read. If its the type of piece where you would only lightly read it then don’t scan it word by word.
2.BE SPECIFIC: When and if you find things in the piece that you have problems with be sure to list the exact places in the text where it doesn’t work. You were asked for your input because you are respected. Give the writer a reason for every problem you have. There is no shame in saying that you wouldn’t change anything. At the same if you want to see a lot changed list the exact page numbers, paragraphs, and reasons for your issues with the piece. They will thank and respect you.
3.BE COURTEOUS: Don’t make your friends cry. No writing is beyond repair. Be careful not to make it seem that the piece is flawed on a fundamental level. Instead, try to raise the text to where you would like to see it. Being someone who “tells it like it is” is wonderful when you’re a drunken punk rocker. It gets you respect. When you’re helping out a peer, it actually does the opposite.
